Book Review: Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #2: The Slither Sisters

Today's review is on The Slither Sisters (Tales from Lovecraft Middle School #2)

This delightful series, for children age 10 and up, is exceptional. The story line is well thought out and it is presented in a fun and entertaining manner. I myself couldn't refrain from chuckling out loud a time or two.

Lovecraft Middle School isn't your ordinary middle school. Built with the remains of the old Tillinghast Mansion, it has become a portal to the "invisible lands." Lands where monsters and demons dwell.

Robert Arthur, along with Glenn Torkells and Karina Ortiz, have just defeated the Gargoyle disguised as Professor Garfield Goyle, but the danger is not over. This time they have to tackle Sarah and Sylvia, who were taken into Tillinghast's Mansion and have returned as demons in disguise.

The Master himself wants to take over Lovecraft and intends to take every student. In order to prevent that from happening, the school's librarian steps up to help and comes up with plan of action that no one sees coming. But will the plan work?

I don't think I have been this enthralled by a children's series since my Nancy Drew days. Only this series is much creepier, and I just love it. I guess I'll have to clear more space on my bookshelves because this series is sure to become a great success.

This second novel in the Tales from Lovecraft Middle School series begins right where Professor Gargoyle ended.  Seventh-grader Robert Arthur has discovered that two of his classmates are actually sinister snake-women in disguise. Even worse, his new middle school is full of “gates” to a terrifying alternate dimension – a haunted mansion full of strange spirits and monstrous beasts.  For Robert to protect his teachers and classmates, he'll need to return to this haunted dimension with his best friends Glenn and Karina.   Can they uncover the secrets of Lovecraft Middle School before it's too late?

The Slither Sisters features more bizarre beasts, more strange mysteries, and more adventure.  It's perfect for readers ages 10 and up. Best of all, the cover features a state-of-the-art “morphing” photo portrait – so you can personally witness the sisters transforming into their slithering alter egos.  You won't believe your eyes!

Book Review: Professor Gargoyle

Today's review is on Professor Gargoyle (Tales from Lovecraft Middle School)

Being as all of my life I have always been my Gothic self, I can definitely say that I wish that this book was around when I was a youngster.

There is nothing that I do not like about this book. From the amazing front cover to the rat infested back, Professor Gargoyle is an awesome tale filled with adventure, excitement, and paranormal activity.

Starting at a new school is never easy, especially when you realize that none of your friends are there. It's no wonder Robert Arthur is unhappy to be going to Lovecraft Middle School. But wait, Robert hears a familiar voice calling his name. Of all people, the boy who had tortured him all through elementary school is attending Lovecraft, and he isn't through bullying.

Besides dealing with Glenn Torkells, Robert notices that strange things are happening at Lovecraft, and soon finds himself right in the thick of it.

Chock full of monsters, demons, rats, and even a ghost, the Tales from Lovecraft Middle School series promises to entertain both boys and girls, and a few adults too.

Strange things are happening at Lovecraft Middle School. Rats are leaping from lockers. Students are disappearing.  The school library is a labyrinth of secret corridors. And the science teacher is acting very peculiar – in fact, he just might be a monster-in-disguise.  Twelve-year-old Robert Arthur knew that seventh grade was going to be weird, but this is ridiculous!

Book Review: Her Loving Husband's Return

Today's review is on Her Loving Husband's Return by Meredith Allard

To start off, let me say that I had fallen in love, love, love with this series back in April of 2011 when the first book came out. From page one to page 290 I was captivated by the struggle, strength, and love of the two main characters James and Elizabeth Wentworth. Of course being that I am from Massachusetts may have played a small part, and let's face it, those school field trips to Salem were way more interesting and exciting than the ones to Plymouth Plantation.

I couldn't wait for the next installment, and when the second book in the series came out in April of 2012 I dropped everything and dove into it. Low and behold, I was again enthralled with the Wentworth's continuing story. I loved how Allard incorporated Elizabeth's unborn child into the mix as well as the Native American aspect.

Waiting on pins and needles for the final book, I jumped at the chance to review Her Loving Husband's Return. Well, I'm not jumping so much any more. You see, this installment was more like a History lesson than what I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, being married to a Japanese American I both enjoyed and learned from the story, but that's just it, I LEARNED.

At the end of Her Loving Husband's Curse, James voluntarily goes to the detainment camp for vampires. A detainment camp that was actually used 70 years earlier for the Japanese Americans after the bombing of Pearl Harbor. And while there, James begins writing to his beloved telling her about the time he spent at Manzanar with the Japanese citizens that were interned there all those years ago. And that takes up a huge part of the 300+ pages.

Through it all though James and Elizabeth; now Sarah, struggle with being apart. They had only just become the complete family that they should have been back in the 1600's. Sarah wants to be closer to James and James is willing to do anything to be back with Sarah and their daughter Grace. He's even willing to be returned though it my cost him his immortal life.

Was Her Loving Husband's Return as good as the previous two books? Not really. How do I know this? After I closed my computer my daughter asked how the book I was reading was. My response was simply "It was all right."

What would you do to return to the only one you have ever loved? James Wentworth’s secret is no longer a secret, and now he and his beloved wife, Sarah, have been separated. While suffering his own internment, James is reminded of his time with Japanese-Americans in the Manzanar Relocation Camp during World War II, and he cannot allow the past to repeat itself. With the help of his friends—Chandresh, Jocelyn, Timothy, even the irreverent Geoffrey—James learns what it means to return, and he is determined to return to his Sarah no matter the challenges—or the consequences. In the end, it may be up to Olivia, the most powerful of witches, to grant James’s most fervent wish. Will James and Sarah be reunited once and for all despite the madness surrounding them?

Book Review: Avoiding Mr. Right

Today's review is on Avoiding Mr. Right by CJ Ellisson

Though I wasn't an instant fan of Mrs. Ellisson work, over the course of her books I have become a true follower.  Each of the books I have read; all of her V V Inn books and Vanilla on Top, have shown growth in not only her base writing skills but also her ability to spark desire in the reader. In fact, after reading Vanilla on Top I had no problem writing a positive review and taking a cold shower. And while I enjoyed Avoiding Mr. Right, I feel that it fails to reach the height of the bar set by its predecessor in it's eroticism.

Where VOT was full of hot attraction and blazing sex, Avoiding Mr. Right was more of a love story. Emotionally scarred woman, strong man to help, love ensues. Don't get me wrong, there was sex, just not as hot and heavy as VOT. And let's be real, hot and heavy sex is what I was looking forward to and expecting. (I've been married for 19 years, I need some dreaming material.)

Carla Johnson is in complete control of her life, including her sex life. She decided a long time ago that she didn't need a man in her life to fulfill her. What she does need though is nookie, and a lot of it. After all, she's a very sexual woman. Her friend Heather; who used to be a meek woman turned dominatrix in VOT, worries that Carla will never find her Mr. Right if she continues having casual sex the way she does.

Andy works in the same office as Carla and has been in love with her for months. Though he has tried to get closer to her, she continues to pretty much ignore him. Sure he's smart and handsome, but he's also an accountant. And there's no way a boring accountant could provide the excitement in life and in the bedroom that she needs. But after a few drinks at the end of the day and a night of less than memorable sex between the two, Andy sets out to show Carla that he really is the man for her.

If I had to rate Avoiding Mr. Right on it's eroticism alone it would rate a bit low, but I cannot rate any book on just one point. I have to take the whole piece into consideration. And with it's love story and the way Ellisson shows the struggle and growth of her main character I'm happy to give it the rating it deserves.

Carla Johnson thinks issuing orders to a lover will keep her heart safe and leave her in charge of her own destiny. Afraid for Carla’s future, her best friend Heather implores her to change her self-centered ways, handing her a list of love life mistakes to steer clear of:

1. Casual Sex
2. Friends with Benefits
3. Avoidance of Intimacy

Carla ignores the list—unwilling to face she might have a commitment problem. Until she invites a co-worker to her place one night. She instantly regrets the hum-drum sexual encounter and discourages the accountant from pursuing her.

Andy Shea refuses to become another lover the feisty blonde dumps. It'll take a patient man with a strong hand to unlock Carla's sexual awareness and win her heart. He’s up for the challenge to convince her he’s the one—and eager to prove this number cruncher won’t make a boring bedmate.

Book Review: Alice's Alpha

Today's review is on Alice's Alpha by Ann Gimpel

I can only offer this advice after reading a great amount of books by Gimpel. If you haven't read any, read some. If you have read some, read more. Especially the novella's. Though you will find some commonality in each; sexy men, woman in some sort of distress, happy ending, you will be captivated by each scenario. And did I mention the sexual tension? Or the actual copulation?

Gimpel's ability to make the reader a little hot under the waistline without crossing over to the XXX zone is pretty much unparalleled. And in a short piece, that's a mighty good feat. If she were to venture into the true erotic genre......wow! What do you say Ann?

In Alice's Alpha we of course meet Alice, a civil engineer who enjoys mountain climbing. Because her career and her hobby are viewed as masculine many men are intimidated by her, leaving Alice a 30 year-old virgin. But that's about to change, or so she hopes.

Alice has been friends Brent for quite some time and has hopes that their relationship will change to a more romantic one. But pressing up against him or flaunting her breasts seems to have no effect. Then, while on a climbing adventure he has to leave right away and basically deserts her, she just about gives up any hope for a future with him. But Brent has a secret. One he cannot tell anyone.

Alice makes it down the mountain but she isn't able to reach her car. Thankfully she sees Lon Chaney's cabin where she meets Jeddediah (Jed), an amazingly handsome man who offers to let her stay in the cabin until the morning. Unknown to her however is that Jed is a wolf shifter and the leader of his small pack. Nor is she aware that she is Jed's mate.

Passion burns throughout the pages leaving me wanting more. Again I suggest Gimpel try to hop on over to a true erotic novel.

Alice has given up trying to find a man, that is, until she meets wolf shifter Jed. As desire burns between them, Alice is surprised to discover her life has changed forever. But not as surprised as when she learns she is also the bonded mate of two of Jed’s pack mates! The pages ignite with passion in Book 1 of Ann Gimpel’s hot, new paranormal series, Wolf Clan Shifters.

It’s 1936. Thirty-year-old Alice has almost given up finding a man. Between civil engineering and mountain climbing, her interests are so masculine she scares men away. A poor route choice lands her next to horror movie star Lon Chaney’s cabin deep in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. She’s wary when Jed, a strikingly handsome man, offers her shelter.

By the time she discovers he’s clan leader for a pack of wolf shifters, she’s in way too deep to back out. Her carefully tended wasteland of a heart cracks wide open. Her preconceived notions shatter. Snared by the mate bond, Alice discovers passion hot enough to change her forever. She’s just getting used to Jed when his lieutenants show up, and she discovers she’s mated to all three.

About the Author:

Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains.

It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved.

Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers her solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company.

Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.
Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.
In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.
